Lewis Schaffer

The page of the greatest American comic living in Nunhead, Southeast London.

“Bold”, “unpredictable”, “hilarious” – and those are just Lewis Schaffer’s words. Lewis Schaffer isn't in Britain as a tourist.

He isn't here as an asylum seeker or on business. He's a hostage... He was once one of the top comics in the home of stand up comedy, New York City, having extended runs as house MC at the Comedy Cellar, Caroline's and the Boston Comedy Club in Greenwich Village.

A short visit to London in 2000 went very, very wrong. Love and marriage and children - then heartache and divorce - took him away from his beloved New York, the greatest city in the world! Lewis Schaffer was dumped into a multi-occupancy council flat in Southeast London where, fighting to be a good dad, he is trapped in the UK.

Now Lewis Schaffer’s goal is to make the best of a bad situation – the British Way. “The British aren’t very friendly. It takes 10 years to make a friend in the UK. I‘ve been here nine years: My friend is coming.”

Lewis Schaffer will accept you as his facebook friend if you tell him you've been to his website.

Quotes

‘Lewis Schaffer has a unique style –
he can insult you
and love you in the same sentence.’

Time Out New York

‘A super-sized portion of harsh, angry, and downright offensive one-liners that just happen to be hilarious. Egotistical and vulnerable, almost at the same time.’
Chortle - 2008

‘…a tour-de-force performance from a comic who’s been on the ropes but definitely come back bigger and bolder, connecting bang on the funnybone. ‘ **** [Four Stars]
Chortle - 2009

‘Blows a hurricane of freshness through many tried and tested subjects. Almost every laugh he gives us he then tops with another, bigger laugh. His jokes might have another comic arrested. ‘ **** [Four Stars]
The Scotsman - 2009

‘Possibly the most unpredictable comic at the fringe.
In short, he is unique. ‘

The Stage – 2009

‘Something interesting is clearly going on here. It feels at times as if he is determined to sabotage his own show. He would be infinitely funnier if he provoked less and focused more, though probably a lot less fascinating..’
The London Evening Standard - 2009

‘A comedian who isn't just joining the dots… you'll leave knowing all about the life and neuroses of Lewis Schaffer but you might also learn a few things about yourself.’
* * * * [4 Stars]

The List 2008

‘The show is oddly refreshing and, in its own way, rather British - its brisk, brusque rudeness hiding an altogether soppier sense of affection for its subject.” ***** [5 Stars]

‘Fascinating…
something interesting is clearly going on here.’

The London Evening Standard

‘Damn funny…
his all-American kitsch is hilariously over the top.’

The Fest

‘Controversial, self-destructive… unforgivable. Benjamin Franklin would have been turning in his grave.’
The Londonist

‘Quirky, likeable and rather dry. Lewis Schaffer tells the audience they are going to like his show, whether they like it or not. And the audience loves his show.
The Independent 2000
